When we look at Scripture, there is one reason why the Jews are in Israel: God has given that land to them. In fact, He even gave the descendants of Abraham that very name. When Jacob was about to meet his older, estranged brother, Esau, after years earlier cheating him out of his birthright and blessing, God took the opportunity to first prepare the younger sibling. The night before the potential conflict, the Lord came in a theophany, or a human manifestation, and held a wrestling match with the patriarch. After God had bested Jacob by putting his hip out of socket, we read of Him giving His opponent a new name:
[God] said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But [Jacob] said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed” (Genesis 32:26-28).

This is an article I wrote over two years ago; I have since revised and added a few things. I have brought it out of mothballs, as I think it is a good one for this time of the year, for Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season. In John 12:47, Jesus said, “For I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.” Truer words could not have been spoken, as Jesus’ name literally means ‘salvation,‘ as we will see in this updated article.

There are a lot of terrible things going on in the world. Yet we are in that sacred season when, as Christians, we pause to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ. We can allow ourselves to be shaped by the darkness this world, or we can choose to let our light shine. I choose the latter. At Christmas, my heart is often drawn back to Christmas as a kid on our family farm in Ohio. I was blessed to be born into a horse and cattle farm that has been in our family for more than 200 years. Christmas, especially Christmas Eve, was always something special. December 24 was also my dad’s birthday, and he was deeply loved by neighbors and friends, which meant our home and farm were always full of life that night.
One Christmas Eve stands out more than the rest. I must have been about four years old. Night was settling in, and the wind and snow were whipping across the barnyard, the familiar lake-effect snow blowing in from Lake Erie at the southern edge of the snow belt. The barn was cold when we flipped on the lights. We climbed into the loft, pitching bales of hay down below, filling the mangers, pouring grain into feed boxes, and topping off water buckets. One by one, the horses and cows were gathered and led through the doors. Without hesitation, they went straight to their stalls and stanchions, knowing their special places. As the barn slowly warmed, the steady sound of animals eating filled the space. Even at that young age, there was something deeply comforting about it.
After dinner, we went to church. I remember my brother Chuck carrying me out afterward. He was fourteen years older than me, and we were incredibly close. As we walked, he asked if I thought Santa had made it to the farm yet. I worried that it was still early on Christmas Eve and maybe Santa hadn’t arrived, especially since we celebrated Christmas that night along with my dad’s birthday. Then Chuck looked up toward the moon and said, “See there? That’s Santa’s sleigh and his reindeer. Don’t you see them?” He said it with such confidence that I stared and stared, even though I couldn’t quite make them out. Chuck insisted he had seen Santa Claus, and that was good enough for me. When we got home, there were presents under the tree, and to me, that was proof enough.
That night was filled with laughter, gifts, and the simple joy of being together. Afterward, neighbors and friends stopped by to wish my dad a happy birthday. Their kids and I played with my new farm set while the adults talked and laughed late into the evening. A few years later, Chuck was killed by a drunk driver. My dad passed away in 1989. Yet the spirit of those two remarkable men still lives on, here in memory and fully alive in heaven. Every Christmas Eve, I feel them close. In the best of times and the worst of times, they were the best of men. We have a Savior, Jesus, who walks with us through every season of life. No matter the state of the world, we can rest in His promise from Matthew 28:20, “I am with you always, even to the end of the world.” God bless you and yours during this season.

When you’re a child, Christmas is all about receiving gifts. In December, your head is swimming with nothing but images of your favorite toys. But the true message of Christmas is not the presents we give to one another. The true meaning is the gift that God gave to us, His Son Jesus Christ.
One of the most remarkable aspects of God’s perfect gift to us is that it came in simple wrapping. Some people will go to great lengths to wrap presents beautifully. But God’s gift came to us not in beautiful, ornate wrapping, but in a dirty manger found in a cold cave in a little-known town called Bethlehem. That’s the beauty of the Christmas event. Jesus took His place in a manger so that we might have a home in Heaven. The Savior was not wrapped in satin sheets, but in common rags. There in a manger rested the greatest gift in the plainest of wrapping.
Isaiah 53:2–3 says, “My servant grew up in the LORD’s presence like a tender green shoot, like a root in dry ground. There was nothing beautiful or majestic about his appearance, nothing to attract us to him. He was despised and rejected—a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care” (NLT).
The New Testament reveals much about Jesus. But the one thing it doesn’t tell us is what He looked like. Luke 2:52 says, “Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people” (NLT). But that’s about all we know. All indications suggest that Jesus’ appearance was plain and unremarkable. His words and actions, on the other hand, changed the world.
An even more remarkable aspect of God’s gift to us is that we don’t deserve it. Consider this: God gave us the ultimate gift of His Son Jesus Christ while we were still sinning against Him. The apostle Paul put it this way: “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8 NLT).
We did nothing whatsoever to merit or deserve His gift. That’s the amazing truth of Christmas. Despite who we are and what we’ve done, God sent His Son so “that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 NKJV).
Christmas is one day away. Prepare your heart for the celebration of the birth of our Savior. He came in an unremarkable form. And He came even though we don’t deserve Him. So, today let’s meditate on the fact that Jesus was born to die so that we might live.
