“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh” (Luke 21:25-28).
Deception is a trick used by magicians. They distract you into looking one way while they manipulate a card deck or other item to seem as if something has happened magically. Deception isn’t a godly attribute when used to deceive people into believing a lie, but most people have used it at one time or another in life. You might tell your child to clean her room. When you go and check on her work, the room is nice and clean. Just don’t look in the closet or under the bed.

On October 31, 2025, Pastor Gary McKibben and I conducted a livestream titled Per Aspera Ad Astra—Latin for “through hardship to the stars”—a phrase famously embraced by Jack Parsons, one of the godfathers of America’s early space program. In that discussion, we traced the modern rocketry enterprise back to Parsons and his notorious, explosion-prone circle of engineers at Caltech and JPL, sometimes nicknamed the “Suicide Squad.” Yet Parsons’s obsession extended far beyond propulsion and pyrotechnics.
By the mid-1940s, he was deeply immersed in the ritual occultism of Aleister Crowley and Crowley’s system of Thelema, attempting to merge technological ascent with spiritual and metaphysical ambition.
That convergence reached its apex in January–March 1946, when Parsons conducted the Babalon Working at the Agape Lodge in Pasadena. Assisted by L. Ron Hubbard and guided through correspondence by Crowley, Parsons undertook a series of Thelemic sex-magick rituals intended to invoke the element of Air and incarnate the archetype of Babalon. In late January 1946, he claimed a breakthrough during a solo conjuration, and by February 1946, he identified Marjorie Cameron as the manifestation of the Scarlet Woman, believing the Working had succeeded in bringing a cosmic principle “down to earth.”

Believers are translated, changed in an atomos of time–in a fraction of an element of time that cannot be divided. They now look into the holy, omniscient eyes of their Lord that are fathomless in the depths of God’s love. He leads them through the portals of glory, to the city called Heaven.
On earth, millions have vanished into nothingness before the stupefied eyes of billions of others. All earthly things that belonged to the departed ones remain behind, including clothing, jewelry, and prosthetics of every description.
I once heard a nationally known reverend–so-called—(I don’t like the word “reverend” in reference to anyone on this fallen planet, because there is only one Reverend, and He has just whisked all who are His into Heaven for their eternal rewards) say something like this: “A rapture—if it were to be something that really happens—would mean that there would be unbelievable carnage upon the earth. God won’t let that happen.”

When I was a freshman in college, I learned a valuable lesson. My professor, Dr. Herb Hirt, told us never to read the New Testament back into the Old Testament. Instead, he said, read God’s progressive revelation from Genesis to Revelation.
Herb is with the Lord now, and he probably would be pleased to know I have followed his instructions for the past 20 years and will continue to do so. But I’m going to abandon his rule temporarily for a reason I’m confident he would appreciate.
I want to explain biblically why I, a Gentile believer in Jesus Christ, support Israel and the Jewish people; and I want to use the small but significant New Testament text of Romans 11:28–29. This passage was penned for the church, which means it applies to Christians today and conveys to us God’s feelings for His Chosen People.

Many American Christians hailed President Trump’s decision to train Nigerian troops on how to confront terrorists and halt the slaughter of Christians in parts of Nigeria. Voices with long experience facing the terrorist Boko Haram and their Fulani partners, however, warn the plan could backfire. My ministry partner of 34 years, Pastor William Agbeti, who works on the ground in West Africa, says caution is essential because the conflict is deeply cultural, religious, and political. He believes infiltration is a real danger. In his view, some trainees may carry secret loyalties that could endanger the very communities the training hopes to protect and place non-Muslim troops at risk. The training may strengthen rather than restrain militants.
Agbeti argues the challenge is persistence. Extremist movements in the region operate on generational timelines. They do not need quick victories; they wait, adapt, and wear down opponents through patience and pressure. A foreign training mission can unintentionally energize recruitment by reinforcing propaganda that Christians are backed by Western military power. Local believers then bear the consequences. He further observes that also warns that the Nigerian government has a soft spot for the extremists, which leaves enforcement uneven even when policies exist on paper. The result is a cycle where attacks continue. In that climate, a purely military approach risks treating symptoms while the underlying networks remain intact, financed, and socially embedded within local systems of influence.
Instead, he suggests accountability and incentives alongside security. First, international pressure should encourage Nigeria to formally classify and publish extremist groups as terrorist organizations. Second, a national commission should be formed with authority to offer a one-year amnesty. During that period, militants could surrender weapons through an arms-for-cash program and enter dialogue with authorities. Leaders refusing amnesty would then face public identification and targeted prosecution. The same commission should provide practical protection guidance to vulnerable communities, helping churches organize safe gathering practices without escalating violence. Training programs would shift toward protecting civilians rather than conducting sweeping offensive operations.
The objective is separating hardline militants from those willing to disengage, shrinking recruitment pools instead of feeding them. This perspective reminds believers that wisdom must accompany compassion. Intervention can help, but careless intervention can inflame. Christians worldwide often feel urgency to act when persecution intensifies, yet effective help requires understanding local realities and empowering lawful order. Prayer, advocacy, diplomacy, and disciplined security can work together when coordinated carefully. Scripture calls believers to pursue peace while standing firm against evil. Nigeria’s crisis will not be solved by one tactic, one nation, or one year. It demands steady resolve guided by discernment. As Proverbs 20:18 teaches, “Plans are established by counsel; by wise counsel wage war.”

When I was a kid, I was fascinated by fire. This fascination prompted me to do some stupid things, like taking little green army men and lighting their plastic rifles on fire so that I could watch them melt into little green puddles. Once, however, I was doing this on a piece of newspaper, which also caught on fire. So, I grabbed the newspaper with the burning green army men and threw it all into a wastebasket. The wastebasket, unfortunately, was made of bamboo, and it, too, was set ablaze. Thankfully, I was able to put out the fire.
That is how sin works. It starts small, and then it grows out of control. That’s what the author of Proverbs 6 was talking about when he wrote, “Can a man scoop a flame into his lap and not have his clothes catch on fire? Can he walk on hot coals and not blister his feet?” (verses 27–28 NLT).
Samson learned that lesson the hard way. He thought he could handle sin. He thought he could keep playing the game. But the devil knows how to package his wares. He knows how to sell his stuff. The devil sized up Samson and figured out that he was a he-man with a she weakness. He couldn’t bring Samson down on the battlefield, so he brought him down in the bedroom. And he found a willing accomplice in Samson, who thought he could handle it.
Temptation comes in attractive packages, but for temptation to succeed, we must be willing participants. For temptation to work, there must be desire on our part. James 1:14–15 says, “Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death” (NLT).
For the devil to succeed, we must listen to him, yield to him, and desire what he is offering. The devil can throw anything at us. He offers different kinds of bait. But it isn’t the bait that constitutes sin. It’s the bite.
That’s why Jesus warned, “Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!” (Matthew 26:41 NLT). It’s why Paul wrote, “If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall. The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure” (1 Corinthians 10:12–13 NLT). It’s why James advised, “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7 NLT).
Temptation can get the better of us only if we choose to play with spiritual fire.
