Rumors have been swirling in the media and online as to whether President Trump has abandoned Israel for the Gulf states. I’ll get into that at length down below. But I want you to know that whatever is done by the president of the United States or any other country cannot impact the future plan God has for my nation. The people of Israel are God’s chosen people, and our land is that which was given to us thousands of years ago in the time of the patriarchs. Millennia have passed, and empires have come and gone, but Israel remains. Why? Because that is what God promised, and His word is irrevocable.

A Balanced Perspective on Trump’s Middle East Excursion

Every time I say anything critical about Donald Trump I can be assured of one thing, I am going to lose subscribers. It’s like clockwork. So, I will begin this news item saying that Donald Trump on his worst day is light years better than Kamala Harris on her best day. I like Donald Trump. Had I been an American citizen, he would have received my vote. However, just because I support someone, it doesn’t mean that I can’t disagree with them and call them out when I believe they deserve it. And on this Middle East trip, I think he deserves to be called out in a few areas.

It didn’t begin with this trip. Even before he left for my neighborhood, his administration signed a ceasefire deal with the Houthis. Somehow in the hoopla of it all, he neglected to tell Israel about it, allowing us to learn about the agreement through the media. Essentially, he said that as long as the Yemenite terrorists don’t attack any American ships, he will refrain from dropping thousands of pounds of explosives on their cities and ports. Nowhere in that treaty does it mention desisting from firing cruise missiles at Israel. In fact, while Trump was in Saudi Arabia making a speech, a Houthi-fired missile flew over that country on its way to mine. The president also made statements about possibly allowing Saudi Arabia to develop its own nuclear program, a decision that Israel would like to have been a part of, considering the kingdom of Saud is our neighbor.

I will get into more details as they apply to the stories below. But let me say ahead of time that I understand that this is a business tour and the president is an America-first businessman. I don’t fault him for that. That is who he was elected to be, and for me to expect him to put Bible before business is unfair. Not only is he a businessman, but he is a New York businessman. That means he has had to deal with every type of person, no matter their character, in the unions, in construction, in government, in zoning, in the legal system, wherever. It seems evident to me that the truism that you catch more bees with honey than vinegar guides much of his philosophy. I try to keep that in mind when I see him hobnobbing with the Emir of Qatar and hear him calling the new Syrian president, who until four months ago had a $10 million bounty on his head, “a young, attractive guy.” Despite the fake news media, there are no indications that President Trump has thrown Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu under the bus. The United States is still our greatest ally, and I don’t see that changing under this administration.

Royal Welcome in Saudi Arabia

President Donald Trump landed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday at 10:00 AM local time, where he was greeted with the great pomp and circumstance befitting the most powerful man in the world. Meeting him at the plane was Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), who is the prime minister and de facto leader of the nation for his ailing, 89-year-old father. The two world leaders had productive talks with the result that Saudi Arabia committing to invest $600 billion into the U.S. market, including $142 billion in a defense procurement deal. As I mentioned above, the president indicated prior to the trip that Washington may come alongside Riyadh’s ambition to become a nuclear power. It can be assumed that this subject was further discussed during Trump’s visit.

A President, a Prince, and a Terrorist

The title sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, and, in a sense, it is. On Wednesday, while in Riyadh, President Trump sat for a cup of tea with Crown Prince MBS and new Syrian president and former al-Qaeda and ISIS bad guy Ahmed al-Sharaa. As I mentioned earlier, because of Trump’s hard-knock construction background, he’s learned to look beyond the dark past of some shady characters to see the greater good of a beneficial deal. That is how I somewhat justify the president looking past all the mangled corpses that lay in al-Sharaa’s wake. “I’ve never believed in permanent enemies,” the president said. He went on to say that he sees in the new president a “real opportunity to preserve the unity of Syria”, and a possibility of the nation joining the Abraham Accords. If the president can see that in this man, then he must have much keener vision that I do. It would certainly be wonderful if he turns out to be right.

A Land Flowing with Planes and Money

From Saudi Arabia, President Trump flew to Doha, Qatar, where again he was treated like a king. I just feel bad for him that he never got to experience the terminal at Hamad International Airport which is truly remarkable. The president met with Qatar’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Than, and, after discussions, the two signed some agreements. Amongst other understandings, Qatar Airways is ordering over 160 Boeing jets worth more than $200 billion. Aviation was already on everyone’s mind when it came to Qatar after the nation had gifted to President Trump a $400 million flying palace to be used as Air Force One. Trump accepted the hand-me-down present saying that it wasn’t given to him but to the Department of Defense to be used by him temporarily since Boeing is behind in its replacement presidential aircraft.

Any way you view it, accepting that opulent plane is a bad look. First, everyone assumes that it has more bugs in it than a flophouse mattress. But even more than that, Qatar is a terrorist supporting nation. Their backing of Hamas is the reason that the war with Gaza is still going on. Trump, himself, in 2017 called Qatar out for supporting terrorism. On the world stage, and particularly in the Middle East, appearances mean everything. No matter the back story or the actual truth, the acceptance of this gift makes it seem like the favor of this president can be bought for a price.

Another Opportunity to Miss an Opportunity

By Friday, Hamas must make a choice between two options. First, there is the hostage release deal put forth by Steve Witkoff, United States Special Envoy to the Middle East. This route demands the release of ten hostages in exchange for a 50-day ceasefire and dozens of Palestinian prisoners. If they reject that proposal, then Israel, with America’s blessing, will implement Operation Gideon’s Chariots. This is a multi-faceted option which begins with pushing all civilians south to the Morag Humanitarian Zone, where they will be scanned for weapons before being allowed to enter. Once inside, they will receive humanitarian aid and encouraged to emigrate to countries that are accepting Palestinian refugees. Just yesterday, 600 Gazans departed to be repatriated abroad. Meanwhile, the IDF will commence a full-scale demolition of Gaza, ensuring there is no building left in which terrorists can shelter nor any tunnel remaining in which they can hide. All Hamas’s military and governance capabilities will be destroyed, and all 58 hostages will be released through military force. Hamas has already rejected the Witkoff plan. They have one more day left to reconsider.

The streets next to the European hospital in Khan Yunis erupted yesterday. The IDF employed a Belt of Fire technique, in which the ends of a tunnel are bombed, trapping the inhabitants underground. Then, bunker buster bombs are dropped along the path of the tunnel, destroying everyone and everything inside. Who was the target? Mohammed Sinwar, brother of Yahya Sinwar and mastermind of the October 7 attack, along with Rafah Brigade Commander Muhammad Shabana, Hamas military leader of the southern Gaza Strip sector, and Abu Obaida, Hamas spokesman. All indications are that this triumvirate of evil was sent to their final judgment, however we are all anxiously waiting confirmation. With the stubbornness of Mohammad Sinwar gone, the possibility of a conclusion to this war would increase substantially.

Under pressure from the Trump administration and the Qatari emir, Hamas released Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander on Monday. Abducted on October 7 while serving in the IDF, Alexander endured severe torture in the 584 days he was held. When he was finally reunited with his family, his arms bore the scars of his abuse. Unfortunately, it was with his release that the circus truly began. Reports surfaced that Alexander was going to be forced to travel to Qatar to meet with President Donald Trump and the Qatari emir to thank them for their intervention. I was appalled when I heard this, because it was due to Qatar’s support of Hamas that Edan had been held for so long. Ultimately, it was announced that due to his medical condition, he could not fly to Qatar. Whether this is true or it was just a way out of what had become a firestorm of criticism, I don’t know. I’m just grateful that he wasn’t required to carry out such a disgusting act of obeisance.

Israel Shuts Down Yemen

As I told you last week, May 5-6 saw Israel decimating the international airport in Sana’a, Yemen, and hitting other Houthi-related locations throughout the nation. The Yemeni government is saying that they are reopening the airport to limited use, but it is unlikely that they can even find a runway in good enough shape to land a plane. On Sunday, Israel issued an evacuation warning to all Yemeni seaports because an attack was imminent. No attack came. Then yesterday, Israel doubled down on their warning saying that everyone better abandon the ports or risk bombs dropping on their heads. Still, as of this writing, there has been no attack. Why is Israel doing this? They are effectively shutting down the ports without firing a shot. Already, most international shipping has left Yemen so they could protect their property. This will make it easier if Israel does decide to attack, because there will be no danger of damaging another nation’s ship. Three missiles were recently fired from Yemen at Israel in a short period of time. Two were shot down and one landed before reaching Israeli borders. It’s likely that if the Houthis stopped chewing khat for just a few days they’d recover enough sense to discover that they’re essentially dead.

Israel Continues Its Dismantling of Hezbollah

Motorcycles, tunnels, munitions, entrenchments – all continue to be fair game for Israel in southern Lebanon. Surprisingly, there is little to no protest from the Lebanese government. All understand that it has to be done and that the Lebanese military doesn’t have the capability to do it themselves. President Trump has urged Lebanon to get out of the grip of Hezbollah, because, once free, it might lead to normalization in relationships with other nations, including Israel. The fact that Hezbollah is giving little resistance to the Israeli attacks shows the terrorist organization’s deterioration.

If President Trump can get the Iranians to agree to a deal that will permanently prevent them from producing nuclear weapons, it really will be the deal of the century. The Iranians absolutely hate us, and so just getting them to talk was a major achievement. But now we could be on the verge of something truly remarkable. If a peace deal can be achieved, we can avoid an apocalyptic military showdown in the Middle East, and that would be a wonderful thing for all of humanity. So let’s hope that this actually happens. According to President Trump, the Iranians have “sort of agreed to” the terms of a potential deal…

Donald Trump says Iran has “sort of” agreed to the terms of a deal on the future terms of its nuclear program.

On a visit to Doha, the US president said: “I want them to succeed. I want them to end up being a great country. But they cannot have a nuclear weapon. It is very simple really. It’s not like I need to give you 30 pages worth of details. It is only one sentence – they cannot have a nuclear weapon.”

Referring to the possibility of a US attack on Iran, he added: “We are not going to make any nuclear dust in Iran. I think we’re getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this. You probably read today the story about Iran. It’s sort of agreed to … the terms.”

I don’t know what “sort of agreed to” actually means, and I don’t know exactly what has changed, but I am going to take this as a positive sign.

A few days ago, a formal written proposal for a deal was delivered to the Iranians by Steve Witkoff…

The Trump administration gave Iran a proposal for a nuclear deal during the fourth round of negotiations on Sunday, a U.S. official and two other sources with direct knowledge tell Axios.

Why it matters: It was the first time since the nuclear talks started in early April that White House envoy Steve Witkoff presented a written proposal to the Iranians.

We do not know what was in that formal proposal.

But according to NBC News, one top Iranian official is indicating that Iran would be ready to sign a deal as long as certain conditions are met…

Ali Shamkhani, a top political, military and nuclear adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is one of the most senior Iranian officials to speak publicly about the ongoing discussions.

He said Iran would commit to never making nuclear weapons, getting rid of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium which can be weaponized, agree to enrich uranium only to the lower levels needed for civilian use, and allow international inspectors to supervise the process, in exchange for the immediate lifting of all economic sanctions on Iran.

Asked if Iran would agree to sign an agreement today if those conditions were met, Shamkhani said, “Yes.”

But another official, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, is making it clear that enriching uranium is an issue that the Iranians will absolutely not compromise on…

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, meanwhile, called the negotiations “difficult but useful.”

“Enrichment is an issue that Iran will not give up, and there is no room for compromise on it,” he said. “However, its dimensions, levels or amounts might change for a period to allow confidence-building.”

Araghchi is also claiming that the U.S. military simply does not have the ability to destroy Iran’s underground nuclear facilities…

Iran foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Thursday that the country’s military strength has served as a key deterrent against potential U.S. military action, arguing that Washington has only engaged in nuclear negotiations because it cannot impose its will through force.

“If the other side — whether during the earlier talks with the P5+1 or now with the United States — were able to destroy our nuclear facilities through military means, they would have done so,” Araghchi said. “They came to the table because they cannot impose their will by force.”

If the Iranians have no intention on backing down on the most important issue, does that mean that the Trump administration has decided to back down?

Up to now, President Trump and members of his administration have insisted that Iran must give up enriching uranium and must destroy all facilities where uranium was being enriched or there will be no deal.

If a potential deal really is close, that would seem to indicate that President Trump and his team have decided to compromise.

But if the Iranians will be allowed to continue to enrich uranium, the threat posed by the Iranians will still exist.

Something is not adding up.

Hopefully we will get more details soon.

For now, President Trump is stressing the need for the Iranians to accept the offer that is on the table…

He had stressed while speaking in Saudi Arabia that “this is not an offer that will last forever. The time is right now for them to choose.”

President Trump followed up on Thursday by saying from Qatar, “We’re in very serious negotiations with Iran for long-term peace,” according to AFP.

He said, “We’re getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this… there (are) two steps to doing this, there is a very, very nice step and there is the violent step, but I don’t want to do it the second.”

Personally, I am rooting for peace.

Because a military showdown with Iran would be horrifying.

The moment we start bombing Iran’s nuclear facilities, Iranian missiles would start flying toward Israeli cities and U.S. military bases all over the Middle East.

Once we get to that stage, there will be no turning back.

We stand on the brink of a major turning point in history, and the decisions that are made in the days ahead will have very serious implications for all of us.

The Trojan Horse in the Grid: Chinese Kill Switches Found in Solar Farms

In late April, a sudden and massive blackout plunged parts of Spain and Portugal into darkness after just 2 gigawatts of power dropped from the grid--an amount small enough to be caused by a single infrastructure failure. Power returned in hours, but the implications were staggering: Europe's energy systems are now so interconnected, so centralized, and so vulnerable, that a minor disruption can lead to a continent-wide crisis.

Now, the United States is waking up to a far more alarming possibility--not an accident, but an attack. Investigations have revealed that Chinese-manufactured power inverters installed in American solar farms contain components capable of remote shutdown. In some cases, these so-called "kill switches" include cellular radios that allow for the inverters--the critical devices that convert and send solar power into the U.S. grid--to be turned off from anywhere in the world.

One expert warned this gives Beijing the ability to flip a switch and trigger blackouts across the U.S.--or worse, physically destroy portions of our grid in a moment of strategic tension or war. These revelations, first reported by Reuters, are not speculative. They're real. And they expose what many national security experts are calling one of the gravest infrastructure threats America has ever faced.

An Invisible Invasion--Already Inside Our Grid

The danger isn't looming on the horizon--it's already here. Chinese-built inverters are embedded in solar farms across the country, particularly in the Southwest, Midwest, and California, where solar energy is booming. Two Chinese companies--Huawei and Sungrow--now dominate the global inverter market, accounting for more than 50% of installations worldwide. That means thousands of American solar systems are potentially equipped with components that can be remotely accessed or disabled, creating a backdoor into the U.S. electrical grid.

This isn't just a software vulnerability. These inverters include physical hardware and embedded cellular communications capable of overriding local controls. In one Texas incident last year, a U.S. company discovered its inverters had been shut off remotely by a Chinese manufacturer. The incident sparked internal panic, but the Department of Energy has only recently begun to disclose these vulnerabilities to the public.

A former intelligence official described it this way: "It's as if you handed your house keys to a stranger who lives across the world--and then wired your front door to respond only to their phone."

How a Grid Attack Would Cripple America

If an adversary like China triggered a coordinated shutdown of compromised inverters, even a partial failure of the grid could cause massive cascading effects, including:

Rolling Blackouts in Major Cities

Hospitals, emergency response centers, and airports could go dark, creating panic and putting lives at risk.

Transportation Chaos

Rail systems, traffic lights, and EV charging stations would go offline, stranding commuters and halting commerce.

Food and Medicine Shortages

Refrigeration in warehouses and grocery stores would fail. Supply chains would seize up. Within 72 hours, shortages would begin.

Digital Collapse

Internet providers, ATMs, online banking, and even 911 dispatch centers could become inaccessible in affected areas.

National Defense Impacted

Military bases and critical communications lines share power infrastructure with civilian systems. Disruption could weaken America's readiness during a national emergency.

It's the very definition of asymmetric warfare: winning without firing a single shot--just flipping a switch.

This Isn't the First Warning--We've Ignored Others

The idea of a foreign power embedding itself into U.S. infrastructure isn't new. In fact, this is the third major warning in just the past five years:

1. Huawei's Telecom Infiltration

In 2019, the Trump administration moved to ban Huawei equipment from U.S. communications networks. Intelligence reports revealed hidden access features that could allow China to eavesdrop on calls or disable entire telecom systems. The U.S. had to spend billions to rip out Huawei's hardware from rural networks.

2. China's Port Takeover Attempt

That same year, a Chinese state-owned company attempted to gain control of the Long Beach Container Terminal in California--a key node in U.S. trade logistics. After intervention by national security officials, the deal was blocked. But it highlighted just how deep and strategic Beijing's interests are in controlling critical infrastructure.

Now, we face the third strike--solar inverters embedded with remote-control components. How many warnings will it take before we respond with urgency?

Energy Independence Means Security--Not Dependency

The rush to build green energy has created a dangerous dependency on Chinese technology. In our zeal to "go green," we've handed control of essential hardware to a regime that views the U.S. not as a partner--but a rival.

This is not a partisan issue--it's a sovereignty issue. Whether you support solar power or prefer fossil fuels, every American should agree: no foreign government should have the power to turn off our lights.

It's time to rethink what "energy independence" really means. It's not just about reducing carbon emissions. It's about ensuring that, in a crisis, our grid stays in our hands--not Beijing's.

What Must Be Done--Now

To protect the American people from this invisible threat, we need bold action:

1. Immediate Ban on Foreign-Controlled Grid Hardware

Congress must act to prohibit installation of foreign-manufactured inverters, transformers, and grid controllers, and begin replacing existing components deemed high-risk.

2. Full Audit of Grid Infrastructure

The Department of Energy and DHS must conduct a nationwide security audit of all solar and renewable infrastructure, identifying vulnerable systems and backdoor access points.

3. Restore American Manufacturing for Energy Tech

Invest in domestic production of inverters, batteries, and smart grid technology, so we stop relying on adversaries for our energy infrastructure.

4. Cybersecurity Standards for Renewable Systems

Federal guidelines must require closed, air-gapped systems with physical override capabilities--and zero remote access by foreign parties.

5. Public Awareness and Preparedness

Inform the public. Utilities, local governments, and families must know how to respond to blackouts and build local resilience in case of failure.

Before the Lights Go Out for Good

The blackout in Spain was a wake-up call. The discovery of Chinese kill switches in American solar farms is the alarm clock. We can't hit snooze this time.

Our power grid is not just an engineering system--it's the lifeblood of our economy, our security, and our way of life. We must treat it with the seriousness it deserves.

If America is to remain free, safe, and sovereign, then our energy must be American-controlled. Period.

Two months ago, the United States Senate Banking Committee introduced what may prove to be a historic—and ominous—piece of legislation: the GENIUS Act. Framed as a long-overdue measure to establish a legal framework for stablecoins, this bill was in fact far more significant. It would have marked America’s first real step toward a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). For those watching global financial trends through a biblical lens, this is no small development.

The GENIUS Act, though positioned as a policy on digital assets, is ultimately about control. While it claimed to provide financial clarity and stability in an age of innovation, it quietly set the groundwork for a digital currency system that could be monitored, restricted, and enforced at the individual level. In prophetic terms, we are witnessing early infrastructure for what Revelation 13 describes as the “mark of the beast” economy, a world where buying and selling will be contingent upon compliance with a centralized system of power.

Though the bill recently failed in the Senate—falling short by 12 votes after initially enjoying bipartisan support—it is almost certain to return. That failure came after nine Democratic senators unexpectedly withdrew their backing. One of them, Senator Mark Warner, stated, “While we’ve made meaningful progress on the GENIUS Act, the work is not yet complete, and I simply cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to vote for this legislation when the text isn’t yet finished,” indicating this is a pause, not a defeat.

The Bigger Picture: A Spiritual Perspective

For decades, voices from both inside and outside government have sounded the alarm about hidden agendas and dark financial shifts. One of those voices is Catherine Austin Fitts, a former Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President George H.W. Bush. Fitts has long tracked what she calls “unauthorized spending” within U.S. government agencies. Her audits uncovered an astonishing $21 trillion in unaccounted funds between HUD and the Department of Defense alone.

Fitts believes these missing trillions have been funneled into classified infrastructure—possibly deep underground facilities—preparing for what elites believe may be a near-extinction event. Whether one believes her specifics or not, her core message aligns with what many of us see: a deliberate shift toward a world where control—not freedom—is the currency of governance.

She warns that the real purpose behind CBDCs is not economic efficiency, but complete social and financial surveillance. Under such a system, artificial intelligence will tailor restrictions to the individual. Your spending, movement, and behavior could all be regulated by algorithms controlled by an unelected financial elite. The digitization of currency and commerce is part of a larger system that aims to create a digital system where people can be monitored, controlled and influenced at an individual level, using AI and software to create custom surveillance for each person. If she is correct, then this explains things like the Real ID.

Consider her example: the Canadian trucker protests. The government froze the accounts not only of protesters, but of those who supported them. That’s not a future possibility; that’s present reality. And it foreshadows a system eerily similar to what Revelation prophesies: a financial order that punishes dissent and rewards conformity.

Fitts says there is a concerted attempt by governments around the world to digitize commerce and currency, which would allow them to control people through money, and this has been happening for a long time. The goal is to convert the currency system into a control system.

The system would allow for the enforcement of rules and regulations, as well as punishment, by controlling access to money and credit. The Bank of International Settlements, which is the central bank of central banks, has been running the process to implement an all-digital monetary system, with hubs all over the world, and has the technology to enforce rules on how money works.

A Silent Takeover of Power

Since 1913, central banks have controlled monetary policy. Now they are poised to take over fiscal policy—that is, taxation and government spending. If successful, this creates a condition America’s founders warned about: taxation without representation.

Fitts asserts that central banks—via global entities like the Bank of International Settlements (BIS)—are engineering a system of digital enslavement. In 2020, the general manager of the BIS openly declared that central banks would have “absolute control” over CBDC transactions. Not just over money, but how it can be spent, when, and by whom.

As inflation rages and economic hardship spreads, we’re told this system is the solution. But look deeper. Inflation, in part, is a result of deglobalization—a process that started with the 2008 financial crisis and accelerated when nations began to pull away from the U.S. dollar. Deglobalization raises costs, disrupts supply chains, and hollows out middle-class economies. It’s a shift that benefits the elite at the expense of the people.

Back in 1994, Sir James Goldsmith—a financier turned European Parliament member—warned that globalization would devastate Western culture, destroy food quality, and hollow out the middle class. His predictions have proven true. The West, and particularly the United States, has become the target. Goldsmith explained that with globalization, “We are going to hollow out the middle class in the West and we are going to devastate our culture and we’re going to devastate the quality of the food supply,” he said the target was always the West and the U.S. dollar.

Prophetic Implications

To those who understand biblical prophecy, none of this is surprising. The book of Revelation tells us where this is all heading: a global system of control, a centralized economy, and the inability to buy or sell without submission to a beastly power.

We are not guessing anymore. It’s not theory. The technology, legislation, and infrastructure are all actively being developed. The GENIUS Bill may have failed—for now—but its momentum reveals how close we are.

In Luke 21:28, Jesus told His followers: “When these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”

Share truth. Wake up your neighbors. Help people understand the days we live in. And above all, point them to the hope we have in Christ. The world may be heading toward economic captivity, but we are free in Jesus. That is the message we must shout from the rooftops.

Daily Jot: The American Chronicles: The Rose River Loop that threw us for a loop

We launched our camping trip to Luray, Va., with what we thought was a brilliant idea: take on the Rose River Falls Loop hike before even checking in at the campground. It was billed as “moderate” in difficulty—3 out of 5—just challenging enough to get the blood flowing and enjoy some waterfalls. A little over four miles. We can handle that. No problem. Spoiler alert: the trail had other ideas. Service Dog Charlie led the way, tail high and ready to sniff out adventure. The trail started gently enough, with blooming forest and a wide path. We passed a few families, a couple of couples on a romantic walk, and some overly cheerful retirees. Then things started to get… interesting.

The trail got rockier. Steeper. Less “walk in the woods” and more “scramble over ancient rubble pile.” At one point, we crossed a stream by walking across a fallen log—because why not add a little tightrope walking to the hike? Part of the trail at places was indistinguishable from the stream as water gently flowed from beneath and in between the rocks, making the path treacherous and slippery. At around the two-mile mark, we reached the first falls—breathtaking and serene. Most people turned back at that point. In hindsight, that might’ve been smart. But no, we pressed on, determined to complete the loop. From there, the trail transformed into a rugged, nearly empty wilderness path.

No people. No sound except water and the occasional rustle of Charlie investigating leaves, rocks, ferns, and mystery twigs. Then, we ran out of water. Our legs were jelly. There was still no cell service to confirm our location, and Chris started asking, “How much longer?” a little more often. My response, without a clue, was always, “Just ten more minutes.” Near the end, we finally saw two people: a young couple with a dog, bounding toward us with the enthusiasm of folks who hadn’t yet met the rocks. I asked them how far to the trailhead. “About a quarter mile,” they said, fresh-faced in gym clothes and tennis shoes. Trying to be helpful, I warned them, “After the bridge, it gets quite challenging.” The guy looked at us—soaked, dusty, and about five years older than we were at the start—and said, “If it gets too challenging, we’ll just turn back.” Well.

Why didn’t we think of that? Well, Chris had not only thought of it, but vocalized it several times. But, no, we were going to conquer the loop. Uh-huh. We pressed on (of course we did), and after what felt like the final scene of an Indiana Jones movie, we made it out. To its credit, the Rose River Loop delivered two miles of stunning cascading falls—some of the most beautiful scenery in Shenandoah. But it also delivered a solid humbling. We weren’t as ready as we thought, but we were determined. We laughed. We limped. Charlie judged us. And yes, we’d probably do it again—but next time, we’ll bring more water… and maybe take the young couple’s advice…a whole lot sooner!

Daily Devotion: Eyes Open

People come up to me and ask, “Greg, what’s the one thing you can say to a nonbeliever that will cause them to accept Christ?” Like I know the hidden secret. Like I’m going to say, “Since you asked, I’m going to show you the ultimate evangelism hack. Here’s what you do.”

Sorry to disappoint you, but there’s no such thing as the ultimate evangelism hack. When I share my faith, I do the same thing that most of you probably do. I just tell my story. I tell people about Jesus, and I pray that the Lord will open their eyes.

You may witness to one person and find that it’s like talking to a brick wall. Nothing. No response at all. And then when you witness in the same way to another person, boom! They get it. They’re responsive to your message. So always pray for the Lord to open a person’s eyes.

I remember when my eyes were opened. I was seventeen years old, and I was listening to Lonnie Frisbee. He made one statement that resonated powerfully with me. He said, “Jesus said you’re for Me or you’re against Me.” And suddenly, I got it. I don’t know why I got it at that moment. I don’t know what it was about that statement. But when I heard it, it was like a light switched on inside me.

Up until that moment, I had been looking cynically and critically at the Christian faith. And then I realized it was all true. It was all real.

I should point out that it’s possible to have your eyes open and still not be a Christian. I’ve met people who say, “I agree that Jesus is the Son of God. I believe that He lived a sinless life. I believe that He died on the cross for my sin. I believe that He rose again from the dead. I believe that He’s coming back again. I believe that the Bible is the Word of God. But that’s it. I believe it, but I’m not going to act on it.”

So having your eyes opened doesn’t necessarily guarantee anything. But it’s a necessary first step. And only God can open a person’s eyes. Paul prayed in Ephesians 1:18 for God to open the eyes of nonbelievers. And when you’re sharing your faith, the first thing you should do is pray, “Lord, open this person’s eyes because there’s nothing I can say or do that will make this person believe.”

There are a lot of people in your orbit who fit Paul’s description in Ephesians 4:18: “Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him” (NLT). Will you be bold and caring enough to reach out to them? To show them the light of the gospel? And to ask God to open their eyes to His truth?
